The leaves of the Ilex
Paraguayensis, better known as Yerba Mate, is an evergreen tree which normally grows up to 8 or 10 meters. The tree grows wild in an exuberant region of Argentina, Paraguay and South of Brazil. It is drunk using a mate gourd and
bombilla straw. It makes a wonderful gift for any occasion!
To prepare the mate infusion, the yerba mate is placed inside the mate gourd and hot water (approx. 158º F - 70º C) is added. The infusion is drunk through a metal strainer straw called bombilla. This infusion is very popular in South America and shared among family and friends as a sign of friendship and hospitality.
