The maté is a container to drink yerba mate tea, a very popular drink in South America.
This original hand made leather maté gourd is decorated representing a typical Argentinian 'bombo legüero' (drum), so called because it is said it can be heard at a great distance ('legua' means league, unit of distance).
To prepare the maté infusion, fill the maté gourd with yerba mate up to 3/4 of its capacity. Pour a little bit of hot water (not boiled) (Approx. 158º F). Wait a few seconds and replenish the mate with more hot water. Then insert the bombilla straw into the mate. Sip gently the infusion using the bombilla.
